Pineview Dairy

blog photo pineview calfThis time of year my family is craving ice cream and there is a sweet little spot to go that you can show your kids where the milk to make the ice cream comes from right before you eat it!  Anyone who lives in the southwestern part of Lancaster has probably been to the Pineview Dairy as it is such a hit with the locals.  A family farm, it has been in operation since 1971.  Little kids especially enjoy it so I recently took my youngest on a mommy date one warm evening.

When you arrive, you can check out the row of calf stalls where the newborn calves are housed.  The birth date is listed on each stall and it is always fun to see how they look at each stage of growth.  We even saw one that had been born the day before we were there…it was amazing to realize how big they are at birth, its dried umbilical cord was still attached! My daughter Lilah delighted over each one, pointing out everything she noticed and jabbering away.  If you go in the early afternoon, you can go over to the barn and witness the dairy herd being milked through an observation window, another wonderful educational opportunity.

After you learn about where the milk comes from, head over to the outdoor order window and take your pick from sundaes, cones, splits, and milkshakes all made from farm fresh milk right on the premises.  Try unique flavors like root beer and salted caramel.  My favorite is pineapple coconut, think pina colada…yum! There are several shaded picnic tables available for use along with a row of rocking chairs on the front porch.

After you are done eating, head inside the country store and pick up some bagged milk, milk products, confections, and even beef and pork from the farm.  A recent addition to the store is orange cream milk, just like the popsicle, but in a glass.  A quick little trip, but a favorite you will find yourself coming back to every year.
