Gifts That Give Hope Alternative Gift Fair

blog-photo-gtghDoes the thought of another round of frantic, overspent gift-giving and finding space to put it all make you want to run and hide until December 26?  Do you wonder what you can possibly give that person that has everything, or your child’s teacher who probably doesn’t need another mug?  I am excited to tell you about an organization that gives you…well…an alternative! Shoppers purchase a gift donation to an organization in honor of a loved one, similar to the catalogs you may receive in the mail for World Vision or Heifer International, for example.   It is especially near and dear to my heart as I have joined the planning committee this past year.  Join us December 10, 2016 and experience alternative giving on a grand scale!  Mingle with 30 non-profit organizations, learning about how they impact our community and our world.  Browse the fair trade goods in the marketplace section.  Grab lunch with an ethnic flair from socially-conscious food vendors.  Send your child on a special scavenger hunt, allowing them to learn while they earn a prize.  WJTL will be live on location with the Kid’s Cookie Break with their ever famous giveaways including Chick-fil-A cookies! blog-photo-gtgh-overview

blog-photo-gtgh-stroopiesOur family has attended for the last four years and each year brings a different twist, so it never gets old.  This year, it happens to fall on Human Rights Day which was established in 1948, and ever since that auspicious day it has stood as the first major stride forward in ensuring that the rights of every human across the globe are protected. From the most basic human needs such as food, shelter, and water, all the way up to access to free and uncensored information, the organizations represented at the gift fair takes strides to meet these needs.  As mentioned, kids can participate in the scavenger hunt which will tie in Human Rights Day articles to the various tables.  Many of the non-profits incorporate activities for kids, fun giveaways, and little games.  Our older children love the independence of exploring on their own, leaving my husband and I to interact with representatives and shop for people on our list.  Gifts range in price from $5 to $50 and at checkout you receive beautiful, unique holiday cards with a description of your gift.  I personally love shopping for many different organizations, so I usually purchase smaller gifts, especially teachers’ gifts.  Those who have received our gifts have always been touched and honored to be thought of in this way, especially since I try to personalize it to their interests.

blog-photo-gtgh-upoharBesides the alternative giving, you will be exposed to many non-profits and social enterprises, which may lead you to get involved further.  What a great way to teach your children about Human Rights, selflessness, philanthropy, and social consciousness.  Now, isn’t that the spirit of the season?
