“Christmas Magic” at Rocky Ridge Park

If Koziar’s is a little too overwhelming for you, another more peaceful option is in York County at Rocky Ridge Park.  An old favorite for our family since our kids were small, this seasonal attraction is located in the heart of a park amidst mature oak trees.  A half mile trail (stroller/wheelchair accessible) winds through the woods where visitors will be surrounded by wrapped trees, lighted displays, and synchronized light and music shows.  Interspersed along the trail are heated buildings containing various displays.  A large train layout was always fun for our Thomas-loving son when he was younger.  One building gave children a chance to sit on Santa’s lap, and another contained taxidermy displays of a wooded nature scene complete with a warm fireplace, a great stopping point for cold nights.  You will have the chance to have a snack (for purchase) or even dinner at one of the two refreshment buildings.  We usually wanted to warm up with hot chocolate and popcorn, although my in-laws enjoyed pulled pork sandwiches to round out their meal. If you need a longer break indoors, sit and listen to the provided entertainment by local musicians.   One of the benefits of being in a recreational park was that towards the end of the trail, there was a full-sized playground children could burn their energy on.  It is a little dark though since the playground itself is not decorated.  The final stretch takes you through a tunnel of lights synchronized to music which is pretty impressive.

The fees are reasonable, there is plenty of parking, the crowds are manageable, and the attraction is well run, experienced now in its 33rd year.  Some of the displays look outdated and tired, but the wooded environment lends a sort of tranquility to your viewing experience, which appeals to my desire for simplicity.  It lacks the sophistication of Longwood Gardens, or the variety and volume of Koziar’s, but there is something about it that keeps our family coming back year after year…for my children, Rocky Ridge truly has “Christmas Magic.”
