Amos Herr Honey Run 5K

As a runner I am always on the lookout for local races and the 5K is my favorite.  Some I do once and don’t feel the need to do again, but the Honey Run is my favorite and it goes on the calendar every year.  The course is decent but really it’s more about the family atmosphere and the excellent prizes and bag swag that keeps me coming back!  Set up at the Amos Herr Park in Landisville, the location is ready made for fun, with plenty of parking, pavilions, and a playground (which is unfortunately under construction this year).  They have several kid’s fun runs which recently have been changed to color runs (colored chalk is sprayed on the kids at different stations during the course—wear old clothes!).  The different kid’s age groups run separately and one year my oldest daughter Eliana got 2nd place, receiving a $15 gift card to Toys R’ Us!  Wow—wondering what 1st place got? The 5K has generous cash prizes for age groups as well, along with a commemorative glass, all the more incentive to run your best.  I realize this is not on most people’s radar screen, but nice to know if it is.  Since I run a lot of races, I don’t feel the need to receive a t-shirt every year, and this is the only race I know of that offers a cheaper registration if you opt out of a t-shirt…combine that with prize winnings, this is one race I usually come out ahead!

However, I think my favorite aspect of the Honey Run is…the honey!  Each participant (including kids) receives a full-size honey bear from Dutch Gold, the front-line sponsor, in their race bags.  We eat a lot of honey at our house and it’s expensive, so obtaining a year’s supply in one night is pretty cool!  Whether you are a serious runner, casual runner, a walker, or have kids who would like to run…this is a great family evening of exercise. Hope to see you there!

Beware: The race is at 6pm and it is in August, so it can be hot which might be a deterrent for some.
